MOVING TIPS
MOVING TIPS
Preparation is the key to success when moving. Some of these moving tips can be used for packing as well.
By law, a moving company cannot transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, flammables, firearms, cleaning fluids, drugs and detergents. Please make other arrangements for moving these items.
- Do not over-pack boxes – a good rule to follow is “the heavier the item, the smaller the box.”
- Start with packing items you will not need in advance of your move.
- Packing the kitchen typically takes the longest
- Use plenty of paper and bubble wrap, when you shake a box you should not hear anything “rattle”
- Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box.
- List the room description (bedroom, living room, etc.) on the top and sides of boxes. Also a list of the contents may be helpful.
- Pack and unpack breakables over a padded surface, just in case the item is accidentally dropped.
- Bubble wrap and plain packing paper is highly recommended (ink from newspapers may stain).
- Always tape boxes (rather than interlocking the flaps).
- Use packing tape. Other tapes do not adhere to corrugated cardboard.
Pack boxes with sealed tops, and make sure nothing is protruding out of the top whenever possible.
- Pictures, artwork, lamps and other breakables should be properly packed or hand carried to the new location. (Please note Castle Express Moving does not insure these items unless we professionally pack them).
- Empty storage cabinets, refrigerators, freezers and anything else that could cause damage by shifting, leaking or defrosting.
- Please empty clothing in dresser drawers also anything breakable or spill able should be removed and packed.
- Empty loose items from desk drawers.
- Legal size filing cabinets can be moved with the contents in place however lateral file cabinets should be emptied.
- Have computers, telephones and other electronic devices unplugged and ready to go before the movers arrive. Also small electronics like DVD players and stereo components should be packed in a box.
You might even want to give your new contact information to your old neighbors in case your pet gets lost close to home.
Essential Packing Guidelines
- Hazardous Items: Remember, movers are prohibited by law from transporting hazardous materials like gasoline, flammables, firearms, cleaning fluids, drugs, and detergents. Plan ahead to move these separately.
- Smart Packing: To prevent damage, pack heavy items in small boxes. Start early with items you use less frequently.
- Special Attention to Kitchens: Given the variety and fragility of kitchen items, allocate ample time for packing this area.
- Securing Items: Use abundant packing paper and bubble wrap. A well-packed box should make no rattling sound when shaken.
- Organization is Key: Avoid mixing contents from different rooms in one box. Clearly label each box with the room and contents.
- Delicate Items: Handle breakables over a padded surface. Bubble wrap and clean packing paper are preferable to avoid ink stains.
- Box Integrity: Secure boxes with packing tape, ensuring they have sealed tops and nothing protrudes.
Special Considerations
- Fragile and Valuable Items: Pack items like artwork and lamps securely. Note: Castle Express Moving only insures these if professionally packed by us.
- Emptying Storage Spaces: Clear out cabinets, refrigerators, and other storage areas to prevent shifting or leaking during the move.
- Pre-move Preparations: Unplug electronics and pack small devices like DVD players in boxes. Inform old neighbors of your new contact details – it’s handy in case of lost pets.
Moving with pets.
- New Veterinary Care: Locate a new vet and emergency clinic near your new home. Consider meeting potential vets to ensure a good fit.
- Pet Acclimation: Introduce pets to the new home gradually, starting with one familiarized room to ease their transition.
Moving with young children.
- Timing the Move: If possible, schedule your move during a stable period for your child, considering school schedules and avoiding times of major changes.
- Travel Comforts: For long trips, consider using pull-ups for recently potty-trained children.
- Entertainment Essentials: Pack a personal bag for your child with favorite toys and activities for easy access during the move.
- Last-Minute Toy Box: Keep one box of toys unpacked until the end to keep your children engaged.
- Detailed Labeling: Clearly label boxes with children’s items, detailing the contents for quick and easy access.
